Tinubu meets Nigerians in China, says “my visit very successful”

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu on Friday in Beijing rounded off his official engagements in China by meeting with Nigerians living in the country, describing his visit as “very good and successful.”

Addressing members of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization in China (NIDO China) and the Nigerian community at the China World Hotel, the President reeled out his efforts to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, green economy and mining during his discussions with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and his participation at the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

“What is uppermost in my mind is for you to continue representing Nigeria as good citizens, and I urge you all to be good ambassadors of our nation in China.

“We will always celebrate our diversity. We cherish it, but this diversity is our commitment to serve. If it is about service, we must be good citizens,” the President stated.

President Tinubu also reiterated the importance of discipline and commitment to national service, citing China’s disciplined society as an example for Nigerians to follow.

“I cannot tell you more, except from the embassy, that China is a very disciplined society and we have to be disciplined too. Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected everywhere in the world.

“We must exploit our diversity and be ready to do everything required of us within the laws of the communities that we live in and reflect a good image of our country,” the President said.

President Tinubu assured Nigerians in Diaspora that Nigeria’s Bank of Industry is prepared to collaborate with them to leverage opportunities back home.

“Nigeria is going through reforms, and we are taking very bold and unprecedented decisions. For example, you might have been hearing from home in the last few days about fuel prices.

“But, can we help it? Can we develop good roads like you have here? You see electricity being constant in quantity and quality. You see water supply, constant and running, and you see their good schools. And we say we want to hand over a banner without stain to our children?

“What is the critical part to get us there if we cannot take hard decisions to pave the way for a country that is blessed and so talented?

“So many of you are so talented, speaking very fluent Mandarin. It is what you contribute and tell them at home that will reflect in the attitude of our people. The more you want everything free, it will become more expensive and long-delayed to achieve meaningful development,’’ the President said.

US court sentences Nigerian brothers to 17-plus years for sextorting over 100 people

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Samuel Ogoshi, 24, and his brother Samson Ogoshi, 21, from Nigeria who were extradited to the US to be tried on charges of conspiring to sexually exploit multiple minors, have each been sentenced by a US court to 17 years and six months in prison and five years of supervised release.

The US Justice Department announced their sentencing on its Facebook page yesterday following the death of a male high school student in the state of Michigan.

“These defendants sexually exploited and extorted more than 100 victims, including at least eleven minors, resulting in the tragic death of a 17-year-old high school student,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in the same Facebook post.

“To criminals who commit these schemes: you are not immune from justice. We will track you down and hold you accountable, even if we have to go halfway around the world to do so,” US lawyer Mark Totten added.

The Ogoshi brothers used hacked social media accounts to create fake profiles, extorting sexually explicit images from victims and threatening to reveal these images unless payment was made.

The Ogoshi brothers were charged in November 2022 alongside Ezekiel Robert, another Nigerian, in connection with the sextortion scheme that led to 17-year-old Jordan DeMay’s death.

The Ogoshi brothers were extradited to the US in August 2023 and pled guilty in April.

The third Nigerian Robert’s extradition is pending following an appeal.

Nigerians face hurdles with new UAE stringent visa policy

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The new United Arab Emirates (UAE) visa policy is restricting the number of potential Nigerian applicants to Dubai and other Emirates regions in the Asian continent.

This is as travel agencies in the country said despite the re-opening of the booking portal by Emirates Airlines two weeks ago, just a few air travelers have indicated interest to travel to Dubai and other emirates regions, less than a month to the resumption of scheduled flight services by the airline, reports Daily Independent.

Also it was observed Emirates Airlines sells tickets in dollars on its portal in contravention of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) arrangements the Nigerian government had with the UAE government.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the minimum airfares on the economy class is $1,030 (N1,648,000) and $4,975 (N7,960,000) on the business class to Dubai.

Further checks revealed that Lagos-London on Emirates costs $1,130 (N1,808,000) and $4,290 (N6,864,000) on economy and business classes, respectively.

The new visa policy of UAE has reduced the number of potential Nigerian travelers to the country.

For instance, a Nigerian passport holder applicant is expected to provide a proof of six months bank statement with a minimum balance of $10,000 (about N16 million) in his or her account before applying for a UAE visa.

For Nigerian citizens with either valid United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Schengen visas on their passports, the rule may be a bit liberal on them.

Also, Nigerians with the green passports are mandated to provide round-trip flight tickets and proof of hotel booking before applying for the UAE visa.

Besides, Nigerian applicants are to also obtain a Document Verification Number (DVN), which the UAE said was to authenticate and verify documentation essential for visa applications to the UAE.

Investigation by this paper also revealed that the UAE unveiled different types of visas for Nigerians with diverse fees, ranging from N150,000 to N270,000.

For a transit visa, a Nigerian passport holder is expected to pay the sum of N150,000, tourist visa for 14 days; N200,000, tourist visa for 30 days; N250,000 and tourist visa for 60 days would pay the sum of N270,000.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Olayinka Folami, the President of National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA), said that flight bookings to UAE had been low unlike in the past.

As of now, only Emirates Airlines has re-opened its portal for ticket bookings, while Etihad, the national carrier of UAE and Air Peace, the only Nigerian airline flying to UAE are yet to do so.

But, despite this, flight bookings had remained low.

Folami confirmed that Emirates re-opened its booking portal to air travelers about two weeks ago, but confirmed the response had been low.

Folami attributed this to unclear and restrictive visa policy by the UAE government, stressing that just a few Nigerians could meet the conditions as spelt out by the government.

The NANTA president confirmed the requirement of $10,000 bank balance by applicants as one of the requirements for issuance of visa by the UAE, wondering how many Nigerians could afford such an amount of money in their bank accounts.

He said: “Emirates Airlines UAE opened its portal for bookings about two weeks ago, but the response has been low because the visa policy is still not clear and a bit restrictive because of the requirements. As we all know, Nigerians are always itching to go to Dubai.

“The visa policy has slowed down the number of people that would have loved to go to Dubai. Nigerians love Dubai, but a significant number who would have loved to go are excluded. I am positive that it will get better.

“You need to have a visa of either United Kingdom or United States on your passport, you have to have a minimum balance of $10,000 (about N16 million) in your account. That will exclude a lot of people. Even an average person going to Dubai has a problem of having a minimum balance of N16 million in their bank account.”

Also commenting on the new policy, Mrs. Susan Akporiaye, the immediate past President of NANTA, said that the passengers’ response had been low.

She hoped that the UAE government would change its policy soon to encourage more Nigerians to travel to the country.

According to her, the travel agencies had already expressed their displeasure about the stringent measures to the Nigerian government immediately it was unveiled, but said there was little the agencies could do to effect policy change.

“However, the traffic for flight is still very low because the conditions attached are very high. It is not the call of the travelling agencies; it’s a diplomatic issue, but we have laid down our displeasure from day one on the stringent measures for visa.

“People may use Emirates to other destinations like the US, and other routes. But, let’s wait and see, the visa process, which has just started and everyone is still trying to understand the process. However, if the traffic is low, the airline may put a bit of pressure on the government and this may lead to review of the policy,” she said.

She also emphasised that Etihad and Air Peace airlines were yet to re-open their portals for ticket sales, but assured that the latter may do so very soon.

UAE had about two years ago suspended visas for Nigerians following a diplomatic row between the two countries.

The website was re-opened for Nigerian applicants in July 2024 by the UAE government.

Also, about two weeks ago, Emirates re-opened its booking portal for Nigerian travelers in preparation of commencement of scheduled operations from its base in Dubai to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on October 1, 2024.

The airline had about two years ago shut down its booking portal against Nigerians following its trapped ticket sales fund, amounting to $85 million.

The backlog of the fund, alongside other airlines, was cleared earlier in the year by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) after a series of meetings with the Nigerian government.

Using Cybercrimes Act to cover-up corrupt Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

by Tonnie Iredia

The drafters of the Nigerian constitution also known as the wise men had two posers, they were not immediately able to solve. The first was what to do with the lofty objectives in chapter two of the constitution titled ‘Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy.’ The thrust of what the chapter required government to do was to implement ideals such as free education and free health for all etc.

It was obvious that in reality, those objectives were rather unattainable in the first few years of government in a developing society. So, it was agreed that the objectives be captioned‘non-justiciable’ meaning they cannot be enforced by the courts. Put differently, nobody would be allowed to go to court on the subject because as ideal objectives, government should be given the discretion to determine which objective to deal with and to what extent at a given point in time.

The second poser was what to do with any government that abuses the discretion by totally ignoring the objectives which could impede societal growth and development. This was what gave birth to Section 22 of the constitution which mandated the media to hold government accountable to the people. It was expected that the media which harassed the colonial master in favour of Nigerians would similarly be able to use their powerful organs of mass communication to push government to be pragmatic about attaining many of the fundamental objectives. No one expected that Nigerian politicians would design and legalize strategies to completely neutralize the nation’s journalists from meeting the clear mandate given to them by the constitution. One of the things our politicians did was to introduce the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc)Act 2015.

Although the Act had in mind serious crimes concerning digital electronic messaging that could undermine national security, politicians at state level immediately domesticated the Act to make it impossible for the state government and its official to be made subject of any media investigation. They assumed that since the world had progressed to the digital age of technology any journalist could be held under the Act because everyone now uses computers. Ebonyi State was one of those that introduced its own Cybercrimes Law under which any political opponent who criticized government was immediately arrested as having breached the law. In 2022 however, the federal high court in Abakaliki quashed the law when it became obvious that it was enacted in secret without public knowledge and quickly accented to by the governor merely to criminalize political dissent.

The most unfortunate part of the law was that those arrested were not given an opportunity to open up on the grave allegations concerning corrupt practices by officials of government especially governors and their relations. In Cross River State, a journalist Agba Jalingo was detained for accusing former Governor Ben Ayade of diverting N500 million from the state treasury. Rather than give the journalist an opportunity to prove his allegation for the good of society, he was charged with treasonable felony, terrorism, cultism and disturbance of public peace. Within a month, Joseph Odok, another journalist and critic of the same governor was arrested over an allegation of terrorism. It became obvious that the charges of terrorism were made by the police to justify the detention of the critics while the facts of the criticisms were covered up.The practice is yet to end.

Only last week,Shafi’u Umar Tureta, a social media critic was hastily sent to prison in Sokoto for posting a viral video featuring a lavish birthday party hosted by the wife of the state governor. The video also allegedly showed the celebrant virtually abusing the naira by spreading money on the ground during the party. Another media report said the social critic also allegedly shared a video of the governor struggling to construct a sentence in English. He was also alleged to have posted the governor’s senior secondary leaving certificate which stated that the governor failed the examination and also earned F9 in English suggesting that the governor was incapable of speaking the language fluently. This case no doubt opens up several issues worth considering starting with the supposed birthday celebrant.

To start with, was there such a birthday party? If yes, nothing is wrong with holding a party. Many people do that often and the fact that a lady is married to a governor should not bar her from holding a birthday party. Second, did the governor’s wife spread money on the ground during the party? If yes, it means the report is correct but she probably would not be asked to account for abusing the naira because of her status. But if the story is only an imagination of the accused, then he could be described as mischievous. In the case of the governor, if the school result reportedly shared was correct, then it is a valid report.Again, did he score F9 in English and did the video show him struggling to construct a sentence in English? All these must be false before the critic can be said to have a case to answer. Even at that,is imprisonment the first step to take? In fact, who authorised the police to imprison the accused before charging him to court?

police to imprison the accused before charging him to court?

It was also reported that Fatima Hassan, the Magistrate before whom the accused was arraigned barred reporters from covering the court proceedings. What was the reason for such a decision on a matter of public interest? Here, we need to return to S22 of our constitution which mandates the media to hold government accountable to the people. If the judiciary is the third arm of government, is Magistrate Hassan not part of government? If she is, how will the media hold her accountable to the people where her court holds secret sessions? This is probably a political case in which everyone is wrongly answerable to those in power. Some two years ago, the situation would have been different because the accused in this case is said to be a passionate follower of the former governor of the state, Aminu Tambuwal now a senator. It is perhaps the different political camps to which the parties belong that seems to explain the importance of the case.

It is however worrisome that a case such as the one before us whose facts are clearly verifiable is sufficiently remarkable enough to warrant what the accused has gone through. Let us assume that some of the allegations if not all are wrong, why order an accused to be held in a correctional centre for as long as September 6 as the magistrate directed? Is that not more than enough punishment before the case starts?

The point that must be made is that whether it is Cybercrimes Act or any other issue that those in authority hope to hide under, we cannot develop if our leaders are allowed to use other strategies to overwhelm the constitution. Any person who decides to hold public office must recognise that he has opted to be the servant of the people. In other words, it is wrong for a governor who has chosen to be a servant to seek to lord it over the same people that are his masters. No person in government should seek to use his office to punish a journalist that the constitution has mandated to make him answerable to the people. This is because on the authority of S22 of our constitution, the media can compel those in authority to fall in line since governance objectives in Chapter 2 of our constitution cannot be taken to court.

FG to sell 50kg rice only to Nigerians with NIN

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has said only public servants with duly registered National Identification Numbers (NIN) will be allowed to purchase as it flags off the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari while flagging off the exercise, said the move is to curb racketeering, and is part of efforts to crash the prices of food in Nigerian markets.

Represented by President Bola Tinubu, Kyari said the intervention will be sold strictly “one man to one bag or one woman to one bag”.

He said the rice — which is to be sold at a flat rate of ₦40,000 naira only for 50kg — is the federal government intervention for the sales of subsidised milled rice to ameliorate the prevailing food crises in Nigeria.

“This food intervention can be said to be timely considering the times and challenges we are in as citizens of this great nation,” he said.

As one of the numerous efforts of the present administration to cushion the effect of high cost of food commodities, kindly join me to applaud the immense efforts of the present administration such as the release of 42,000MT of Assorted Food Commodities (AFC) to vulnerable and the 30,000MT of milled rice which is being flagged-off for sales to Nigerians today 5th September, 2024.”

The minister blamed COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change amidst other localized factors/challenges for the high cost of food prices.

This has led to increase concern and risk of food insecurity and general decline in the standard of living globally. I therefore urge us to understand that the present challenges are not peculiar to our great country,” he said.

He added that the federal government being aware of the potential challenges associated with the sales of an important staple such as rice, at this critical period has deployed a multi-disciplinary machinery of Government, as well put in place certain processes and conditions to ensure the transparency, wider reach and success of this exercise.

This includes one man one 50kg of rice, others are the verification of intending beneficiaries using relevant identification mediums such as the National Identification Number (NIN) and phone numbers to forestall multiple access to this food commodity by fraudulent individuals at the detriment of other citizens,” he said.

He implored citizens to cooperate with the relevant citizens to achieve the initiative.

Let us work together to ensure that the dream of the present administration to uphold the fundamental right to food for all Nigerians is achieved. It is expected that with the injection of 30,000MT (1000 trucks of 30MT each of these important staples into Nigeria’s food balance sheet, it will not only crash the price of rice but also other closer food substitutes and alternatives.”

He called on Nigerians to remain steadfast and be patient with Mr. President as his numerous efforts to enhance Food security will soon begin to pay off.

Anu Okasanya, a 46-year-old care home worker from Nigeria, has died following complications from an asthma attack while fleeing a group of youths in Newry, Ireland.

The group had previously attacked her home twice, and Anu collapsed while running to a neighbor’s house after witnessing them assault another individual.

Anu had moved to Newry 15 months ago and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her only son, Olaitan, 25, who was due to join her next week.

Her family, including her brother Gbenga who lives in Ireland too, told The Irish News: “Her son was her world, and they were supposed to reunite next week. Now, instead of a reunion, he will be burying his mother.”

Anu had been a dedicated care worker and was described by her brother as caring and hardworking.

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes and local authorities have expressed condolences, with police confirming that Anu had no direct involvement in the altercation but tragically collapsed after fleeing the scene.

Local police performed CPR and used a defibrillator in an attempt to save her life, but Anu passed away days later in the hospital.

JUST IN: Ugandan Olympian set on fire by boyfriend is dead

by Folarin Kehinde September 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has died in Kenya four days after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Ugandan athletics officials said Thursday.

“We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei… following a vicious attack by her boyfriend,” the president of the Uganda Olympic Committee Donald Rukare said in a post on X.

“This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,” he added.

According to police, a man identified as Cheptegei’s partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her with petrol and set her alight on Sunday at her home in Endebess in the western county of Trans-Nzoia.

The incident took place just weeks after Cheptegei, 33, had taken part in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she placed 44th.

Cheptegei suffered burns to 80 per cent of her body and had been fighting for her life at a Kenyan hospital since the acting head of the facility told reporters on Tuesday.

“All her organs failed last night,” a medic at the facility, the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), told AFP on Thursday.

Kenyan media had reported that one of Cheptegei’s daughters witnessed the assault at her mother’s home.

“He kicked me while I tried to run to the rescue of my mother,” Kenya’s The Standard reported her as saying.

“I immediately cried out for help, attracting a neighbour who tried to extinguish the flames with water, but it was not possible,” said the girl, who has not been named.

Marangach was also wounded in the incident, sustaining 30 per cent burns on his body.

– ‘We call for justice’ –

The Uganda Athletics Federation also reported Cheptegei’s death in a statement on X.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” it said.

Edo Guber: “Conduct drug test on Candidates”, APC tells NDLEA

by Folarin Kehinde September 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Campaign Council of the APC for the Edo Governorship Election has called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to subject party candidates in the poll to compulsory drug tests.

The council made the call in a statement by its Director of Media, Kassim Afegbua, on Wednesday in Benin.

According to him, the candidates need to present themselves for a serious drug test to ascertain their level of sanity.

Afegbua urged the NDLEA to zero in on all candidates of the frontline political parties with a view to ascertaining their sanity.

“We have been reliably informed that some of them are alleged to be heavy consumers of banned substances, including alcohol.

“A test for all of them will unveil their level of sanity,” he said.

He noted that Edo voters must be well-guided in making informed choices during the elections and avoid voting for a candidate who would spend the state’s resources on funding drug and alcoholic lifestyles.

Afegbua said the test would save the Edo people of any future embarrassment that may arise, adding that the voters could not be deceived again.

“Edo State is too decent to have a governor who will bring shame to the people.

“Anyone who wants to govern Edo State should not be a heavy consumer of marijuana.

“This is a banned substance, and we expect the NDLEA to verify and conduct tests on the major candidates.

“Our candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo is prepared to submit himself to any test any time he’s called upon.

“We expect similar assurances from the other candidates to ascertain their level of sanity,” he said.

Afegbua said the council would continue to mount pressure on the anti-drug agency until the call was yielded.
