EFCC returns $180,300, 53 cars stolen by ‘Yahoo boys’ to Canadian govt

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian government, on Friday, returned the sum of $180,300 and 53 vehicles that were stolen by some cyber criminals popularly known as ‘Yahoo boys’ to the Canadian government.

The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, handed over the money and the vehicles to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking before handing over the recovered property to Canadian government’s representatives, Olukoyede explained that out of the $180,300, the sum of $164, 000 was stolen from a Canadian, Elena Bogomas, in a romance scam.

He added that $16,300 was stolen from Sandra Butler, after which one of the fraudsters used his proceeds to buy an estate before he was later arrested, prosecuted and jailed while the property sold to recover her funds.

“This is an occasion that we are going to use to demonstrate our commitment to fighting financial crimes and to also collaborate with other countries and agencies around the world.

“It’s common knowledge that financial crimes have taken a new turn all across the globe. It has become a global problem. Both Africans and non-Africans have spent a lot of time in their country (Canada).

“The people who perpetrate these crimes, they do it in such a way that we discover that their activities are quite borderless and barbaric. They employ all kinds of means to ensure that they move across various jurisdictions.

“That’s why it has become a very necessary and imperative for us to collaborate with our friends across the world. People share the same objective and mandate with us.

“Most of the countries all across are collaborating with us in the area of fighting financial crimes. What you are witnessing today is a demonstration of the reinforcement of that commitment.

“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been collaborating with us. The demonstration of that collaboration has resulted in a lot of recoveries and the impact that joint operations have made,” the anti-graft agency boss said.

The anti-graft agency czar, while narrating to journalists how the operation began, noted that although the operations spanned several years, it ultimately led to significant recoveries from across parts of the country.

Olukoyede maintained that Nigeria should not be seen as a hub of financial and other crimes, adding that the country doesn’t tolerate these crimes and that the country would continue to clampdown on the criminals.

He stated, “We are here today to witness the handing over of the assets recovered on behalf of the Canadian victims of cybercrime. The operations have taken a couple of years, and eventually, it has resulted in a substantial recovery.

“It has been necessary for us to let our colleagues and our friends from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police know that as an agency, EFCC, and as a country, we are always ready to fight financial crimes.

“Nigeria should not necessarily be seen as a hub (of financial crimes). It is a transit town. Canada is also a transit town and most countries across the world because we move from one jurisdiction to another.

“Today’s handing over is a demonstration of the fact that the Nigerian government does not tolerate financial crimes. Not only that, we are going to pursue it, because not only that, we will investigate, we will recover, we will prosecute and we will ensure that the victim is restituted.

“We have recovered money, financial assets, and also we have recovered vehicles on behalf of the victims in Canada. As a matter of fact, the total 53 vehicles were recovered on behalf of the victims. And also, in one instance, we had $164,000 U.S. dollars given to a Canadian victim known as Eleanor Bogomas.

Dangote Refinery free to sell petrol directly to marketers, says NNPCL

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has said Dangote Refinery and other domestic refiners are “free to sell directly to any marketer on a willing buyer, willing seller basis”, thereby dismissing the allegation of the national oil company becoming a sole offtaker.

The NNPCL was reacting to the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC’s) claim that the organisation hiked the price of Premium Motor Motor Spirit, aka petrol, to undermine the efforts of Dangote Refinery to reduce the price of petroleum products in the country.

MURIC in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, also advised NNPCL to allow Dangote Refinery to operate freely without undue interference.

But the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, in a statement, on Saturday, took a swipe at MURIC, describing its position as “entirely flawed” and the one that is capable of inciting ordinary Nigerians against the NNPC Ltd.

Soneye said the NNPCL is not the sole offtaker while maintaining that the market remains open to lower prices from any domestic refinery.

“The pricing of petroleum products from any refinery, including the Dangote Refinery Ltd (DRL), is determined by global market forces. The recent changes in PMS prices have no impact on the DRL or any other domestic refinery’s access to the Nigerian market.

“In fact, if current prices are perceived as high, it presents an ideal opportunity for the refinery to sell its products at lower prices in the Nigerian market,” he explained.

Sonoye emphasised that “there is no guarantee of lower prices associated with domestic refining compared to any global parity pricing framework, as confirmed by the DRL.”

He said “The NNPC Ltd will only fully offtake PMS from the DRL if the market prices of PMS are higher than the pump prices in Nigeria. The DRL and any other domestic refinery are free to sell directly to any marketer on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, which is the current practice for all fully deregulated products. NNPC Ltd has no desire or intention to become the distributor for any entity in a free market environment, and therefore, the notion of becoming a sole offtaker does not arise.”

He also declared that “The NNPC Ltd cannot undermine a business in which it holds a billion-dollar stake.”

“As an advocacy group for fair and just treatment, MURIC should have verified the facts before making statements that are entirely flawed and has the potential to incite ordinary Nigerians against the NNPC Ltd.”

Don’t Hide Under Beds, Come Out and Fight Bandits Yourselves – APC Governor Tells Residents

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda has called on residents to take up arms and defend themselves against bandits.

This is as the leader, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, acknowledged the government’s failure to protect them.

Radda made the comments during a town hall meeting in Daura, tagged ‘Public Engagement: 2025 Citizens’ Budget Participation Process’.

In a trending video on social media, Radda, who appeared angry could be heard saying, “It is unfortunate that a few bandits/gunmen would raid and abuse a whole community. Even themselves (bandits), are afraid of death,” he said.

He added, “…of all the terrorists operating in Katsina State, they are barely in possession of 700 rifles.

“Regrettably, three famished and emaciated bandits would hunt down 1,000 people while we look helplessly as some hide beneath their beds,” he lamented.

He then asked, “Members of the clergy are here, and it’s mandatory upon them to pass to the general public Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s message concerning a robber that comes after your life or wealth. What did God command you to do?”l

“What humiliation! A situation where you stand idly watching while your wife or daughter is being raped? What is the essence of you being alive thereafter? Death is more honourable than some kinds of humiliation,” he said implying there’s every gain after death for the people to confront the bandits.

He added, “They spare any community that they are aware resists their incursions. They don’t dare attack such communities.

“We must raise insurrections and wanton killings. We have to be battle-ready,” he added.

He pointed out that, “Anytime, five or even 10 of them raid your community and you mobilise like 500 people, before he eliminates five persons, you would have tamed him – whoever he is.

“It is just a façade…they are runaways and afraid of death even more than us. They only want to instil fear and anxiety in us,” the governor added.

Katsina State has been plagued by banditry and terrorist attacks, with over 13 local government areas under terrorist control.

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State Government has postponed the planned resumption of all schools in the state indefinitely, citing the recent hike in fuel prices.

The directive was conveyed in a memo signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, on Saturday in Benin.

It should be recalled that the resumption of schools in Edo State was initially scheduled for September 9.

The memo read: “The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice.

“An official statement from the government has directed that schools remain closed due to the tension arising from the recent increase in fuel prices and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.

“The government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to monitor the activities of their children and wards closely, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike.”

2027: “APC has failed woefully, LP will take over Lagos” — Rhodes-Vivour vows

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The 2023 Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has expressed optimism that the Labour Party would not only win but take over power in Lagos in 2027.

Rhodes-Vivour made the declaration while fielding questions from newsmen in Umuahia, Abia State capital, where he attended an extended stakeholders’ meeting of the Labour Party.

According to him, the party had been made more formidable to take over Lagos State, adding that it has been strategising and consolidating on its gains since its impressive outing in Lagos during the 2023 polls, where it swept the former Nigerian capital during the presidential poll.

The former governorship flag bearer expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, saying that the future of the party has been brightened.

He said, “LP is now well structured, not just to win but to take power in 2027. What we have come to do here in Umuahia is to bring everybody on the same page. We are set for new victories in 2027.

I believe the Labour Party will win Lagos State more convincingly in 2027. Since after the 2023 elections, work has not stopped; we have not gone quiet. Every day, we are getting stronger and stronger.

So, we are not just going to win but stand up and take power.”

Rhodes-Vivour also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of maladministration, saying its abysmal performance has made it much easier for the Labour Party to sweep both Lagos and the country in 2027.

He said the excruciating economic hardship and growing hunger in the land are clear testimonials of the ineptitude of the ruling party at the centre.

CAC threatens to shut down PoS operators as deadline for registration expires

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Corporate Affairs Commission has said it will work with law enforcement agencies and other legal means to shut down recalcitrant Sales Operators who fail to register their businesses as its 60-day deadline lapses.

The Commission disclosed this in a notice Friday on its official X handle.

This comes after CAC on July 7, 2024, issued a 60-day deadline which expired on Thursday, September 5, 2024, for all PoS operators to register their businesses.

CAC noted that there was inadequate compliance with its directive, noting that those who decided not to register may be engaging in unwholesome activities.

“The Commission notes inadequate compliance with the directive for formalization when viewed from the background of the large number of POS operators in the country. Those who have taken steps to formalize in line with the Commission’s directive are commended for their positive attitudes.

“Recalcitrant operators have refused to adhere to the advice for formalization due possibly to engagements in unwholesome activities or for some reasons best known to them.

We are here to make it clear that the Commission is working with Law Enforcement Agencies and other relevant stakeholders to deploy a comprehensive enforcement and sanction framework that may include not only possible shutdown but other severe legal Consequences.”

Meanwhile, the Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria, AMMBAN, recently challenged the CAC’s registration directive.
