BREAKING: DSS takes over SERAP Abuja office

by Folarin Kehinde September 9, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Officers from the Department of State Services have taken control of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project.

SERAP described the action as an ‘unlawful occupation’.

This was contained in a statement released by SERAP on its X handle on Monday.

SERAP said the officers are demanding to meet with the organisation’s directors.

It called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation and attack on the rights of Nigerians,” SERAP urged.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the organisation urged Tinubu to leverage his leadership and authority to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to promptly reverse the seemingly illegal and unconstitutional hike in the pump price of premium motor spirit, commonly known as petrol, at its retail outlets.

Opay, Moniepoint, Other Fintechs End Free Banking as N50 EMTL Deduction On N10,000 Transfers Begins

by Folarin Kehinde September 9, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fintech companies, including OPay, Moniepoint and others, have started notifying their customers of plans to begin deduction of N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) from every inflow of N10,000 and above received by their customers with effect from Monday, September 9.

According to the fintech companies, this deduction followed a directive by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

This mandatory deduction brings to an end the era of free banking services that some of the fintechs provide, though the charges are remitted to the federal government.

The free banking services had made these fintech companies attractive to the members of the public, especially small and medium-scale business owners, students, and the downtrodden.

The regulations provide for a one-off levy of N50 on the recipient of any electronic receipts or transfers of N10,000 or above. For equivalent receipts or transfers carried out in other currencies, the levy will be charged at the exchange rates determined by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In December 2023, the FIRS directed deposit money banks to deduct and remit Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) on foreign currency (FCY) transactions going forward. Within the first five months of this year, a total of N78.95bn was accrued to the government from the N50 levy imposed on electronic bank transfers.

In recent times, the Electronic Money Transfer Levy has become an integral part of Nigeria’s tax system. This levy is, among others, primarily designed to generate revenue for the government. The Finance Act, 2019 amended various subsets of the existing tax and fiscal legislation at the time, including the Stamp Duty Act (SDA).

The Finance Act, of 2023 stipulates that revenue accruing by the operation of EMTL shall be distributed to the three tiers of government based on derivation with the federal government receiving 15 per cent; state governments receiving 50 per cent and the local governments receiving 35 per cent of the EMTL realised.

The regulations mandate the receiving bank to collect and remit the levy to the FIRS by the next working day after the transaction date or on such other date as prescribed by the FIRS.

In addition, the receiving bank is required to deduct the levy from the amount payable if the receiver is a walk-in customer who does not have an account with the bank.

Ajuri Ngelale’s Resignation: A Strategic Exit from a Struggling Government

by Folarin Kehinde September 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kayode Adesiyan

In a surprising turn of events, Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, has resigned from his position, citing medical issues within his immediate family as the reason for his indefinite leave of absence. While the official statement paints this as a personal matter, many insiders and political observers suspect there is more beneath the surface than meets the eye.

A Decaying Administration: Ngelale’s Exit Signals Cracks in Tinubu’s Leadership

Since Bola Tinubu’s inauguration, his administration has been dogged by controversy, particularly regarding communication from the Presidency. As the face of the government’s media strategy, Ngelale has often been thrust into the spotlight, defending policies and decisions that have faced significant public backlash. While Ngelale was initially seen as a confident and competent spokesperson, his resignation has raised eyebrows and sparked debate about whether his departure is more about the dysfunction within the government than any personal issues.

Many are speculating that Ngelale’s exit is a strategic move, distancing himself from an administration that has been criticized for its inefficiency, lack of transparency, and inability to manage critical national issues effectively. His departure could be seen as a subtle protest against the mediocrity that has come to define this administration, a refusal to continue endorsing decisions that fail to meet the needs of Nigerians.

The Misinformation Machine

Over recent months, the Tinubu administration’s media department, under Ngelale’s watch, has been accused of spreading misinformation and inconsistent narratives. Notable among these were:

  1. The Inaccurate Fuel Subsidy Communication: After the government removed fuel subsidies, leading to nationwide hardship, Ngelale’s office released confusing and contradictory statements about fuel availability, pricing, and the administration’s plans for cushioning the effects on citizens. These communication blunders created chaos and further eroded trust in the government.
  2. False Claims About Economic Recovery: In multiple media addresses, Ngelale’s team asserted that Nigeria’s economy was on a rapid path to recovery, citing manipulated growth statistics that were later debunked by economic experts. The reality on the ground, with rising inflation and a weakened naira, painted a vastly different picture from the official narrative.
  3. The Phantom Achievements on Climate Action: Ngelale was also the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and his office touted progress in Nigeria’s climate change initiatives, including major international partnerships. However, investigative reports found little to no tangible development on these fronts, leaving many to wonder if these achievements existed only in press releases.

These instances of misinformation have been deeply damaging to the credibility of the Tinubu government, and Ngelale’s departure could signal his unwillingness to continue defending such missteps.

Inner Circle Feuds and Power Struggles

Beyond the misinformation and public relations challenges, there have also been rumors of growing tension within Tinubu’s inner circle, with Ajuri Ngelale reportedly clashing with other key figures in the administration. Sources close to the Presidency indicate that there has been a significant power struggle over messaging, with some factions within the government pushing narratives that Ngelale found untenable.

His relationship with key members of the administration, particularly those close to the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has reportedly been strained. Insiders suggest that Ngelale was often sidelined in critical decision-making processes, despite his role as the official spokesperson for the President. This lack of cohesion and unity in messaging only added to the disarray within the administration, further alienating Ngelale from the leadership team.

A Tactical Retreat?

Given these factors, it’s not hard to imagine that Ngelale’s resignation is, in fact, a tactical retreat—a way for him to salvage his reputation before the ship sinks further. While his official statement emphasizes family matters, many believe that this is simply a convenient cover for what is truly a principled exit. Ngelale has long been regarded as a capable and ambitious figure, and it is unlikely that he would bow out quietly from national service without a significant reason.

In his resignation statement, he mentions looking forward to returning to public service when “time, healing, and fate permit.” The implication here could be that Ngelale is leaving the door open for a future in politics, possibly in a capacity far removed from the Tinubu administration.

The Bigger Picture

Ngelale’s resignation, while framed as a personal decision, could reflect a deeper discontent within the Tinubu government. As one of the most visible faces of the administration, his exit could signal to the public that even insiders are beginning to question the direction the government is heading.

Whether Ngelale will speak more openly about his reasons for stepping down remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: his departure has left a noticeable void in the already embattled Tinubu government. As Nigerians continue to grapple with the challenges of daily life, from economic instability to political uncertainty, the resignation of such a high-profile official adds yet another layer of complexity to the nation’s ongoing struggles.

Ajuri Ngelale may have left the stage, but the questions about the competence and credibility of the Tinubu administration remain. #pk.

BREAKING: “He Was Fired” – Report Reveals How Ajuri Ngelale Was Removed from Tinubu’s Gov’t [DETAILS]

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Details have emerged about the sudden exit of Ajuri Ngelale, former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity.

Contrary to his claim of resigning due to a “vexatious medical situation” in his family, a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has exposed that Ngelale was actually fired by the presidency.

According to highly-placed sources within the presidency, Ngelale’s departure was a result of a long-standing power tussle with Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

The feud between the two officials had been ongoing since Tinubu’s election in 2023, with Ngelale reportedly considering himself superior due to his prior experience in government.

“Ngelale considered himself untouchable because he had the backing of the president’s son Seyi and Femi Gbajabiamila, the president’s chief of staff,” one source disclosed.

“He was fired; I became aware of this on Tuesday, but I won’t rule out the possibility that it happened earlier. When he got the letter, he started to plead to be allowed to resign as a soft landing. He was eventually given a soft landing, which is understandable. News of his sacking in public would have thoroughly embarrassed not just Ngelale but the presidency too.”

The source went on to disclose that there were interventions made with the aim of settling the issue but Ngalale was bent at reconciliation.

“The Ngelale-Onanuga feud was no secret in the villa, so several top appointees and cabinet members attempted to intervene at separate times; and while Onanuga was open to peace talks, Ngelale wasn’t,” the source said.

“For example, Mohammed Idris Malagi, the minister of information and national orientation, called for talks four times. Onanuga was willing to attend but Ngelale snubbed them all, always claiming he was busy.”

The report reveals that Ngelale’s relationship with Onanuga was strained, and he even blocked Onanuga from having an office of his own until recently.

A source close to the presidency said Onanuga, despite being formally appointed in October 2023 “was a squatter in the presidency and did not have an office of his own until just a few months ago”.

“When Onanuga was appointed, he had no office. He was squatting in Tunde Rahman’s office,” said one of the sources. “It was just recently that he eventually got an office that belonged to either Wale Edun or Zacheus Adedeji when they were still advisers.

Rahman is the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Zacheus Adedeji is the special adviser on revenue while Wale Edun is special adviser on monetary policy. All three advisers were appointed months before Onanuga’s appointment.

Sources also revealed that Ngelale’s appointment was facilitated by his connection to Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, and Femi Gbajabiamila, the president’s chief of staff.

The sources said his backings gave him the entitlement in the presidency. According to a source, “It was about how he got the job.”

How Ajuri ingratiated himself with Tinubu
“During the 2023 presidential electioneering, Jumoke Oduwole, the special adviser on Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), introduced Ngelale to Gbajabiamila,” said the source.

“When Ngelale got there, he met Seyi. He told Seyi he would facilitate a CNN interview during which Tinubu’s presidential ambition would be discussed. Seyi thought it was impossible, but Ngelale did it. He secured the interview on CNN. He then told Seyi the time and date it would air. Seyi promised Ngelale that Tinubu would phone him if he pulled it off. Immediately after the interview was aired, Tinubu called Ngelale.

“When Tinubu won the election, Ngelale was abroad. People told him to return home but he said no; he insisted he would get his own appointment once he arrived in the country. And that was exactly what happened: Ngelale’s appointment by Tinubu was announced days after his return to Nigeria.

“Conversely, Gbajabiamila delayed the announcement of Onanuga’s appointment for at least two months. It required Chief Bisi Akande, who originally made the case for Onanuga’s appointment, to return to Tinubu for follow-up conversations. That was when Tinubu ordered that Onanuga’s appointment should be made, and that was how Onanuga came to the villa.”

It is also understood that staff at the presidential villa and civil servants involved in the president’s communication strategy were aware of the strained relationship between Ngelale and Onanuga. As a result, they felt caught in the middle, believing that collaborating with one individual would lead the other to perceive them as adversary.

“This meant thework of publicising the president’s progressive policies was derailed,” said the source.

“By the way, Ngelale instructed civil servants that no statement from Onanuga could go out if he had not personally cleared it. If you speak with sources across divides, they would tell you Onanuga was the more peace-seeking of the duo. But this particular order from Ngelale to civil servants annoyed Onanuga.”

“He did not have a good relationship with journalists. Ask the reporters; ask the state house correspondents. And also ask editors,” the source added.

“Many people consider him disrespectful and arrogant, even the editors. You can hardly find any important editor in Nigeria who likes or regards Ngelale.”

It can be recalled that Ngalale in his letter of resignation said, “On Friday, I submitted a memo to the Chief of Staff to the President informing my office that I am proceeding on an indefinite leave of absence to frontally deal with medical matters presently affecting my immediate, nuclear family,” Ngelale wrote.

“While I fully appreciate that the ship of state waits for no man, this agonising decision — entailing a pause of my functions as the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity and Official Spokesperson of the President; Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen — was taken after significant consultations with my family over the past several days as a vexatious medical situation has worsened at home.”

He added that he looked “forward to returning to full-time national service when time, healing, and fate permit”, and respectfully asked “for some privacy for my family and I [sic] during this time”.
