Just in: Putin Says He Prefers Biden Over Trump

by Leading Reporters February 16, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

Russian President Vladimir Putin described US counterpart Joe Biden on Wednesday as more “predictable” than Donald Trump but said the Kremlin was prepared to work with whoever wins November’s election.

Asked by a journalist who Russia would like to see win in the likely contest between the Democratic incumbent and Republican frontrunner Trump, Putin said: “Biden, he’s more experienced. He’s predictable, he’s an old-school politician.”

Putin batted away questions about Biden’s age and health, with the president set to turn 82 just weeks after the election.

“When I met Mr Biden three years ago, it’s true, people were already talking about his inabilities, but I saw nothing of the sort,” said Putin, evidently referring to a summit in Geneva.

US polls show voters have strong concerns about Biden’s age.

The age issue has been compounded by two recent episodes in which Biden confused European leaders with dead predecessors.

The White House was forced to vehemently defend the president’s competence last week after a special counsel report described him as an “elderly man with a poor memory”.

Biden himself responded angrily to the accusation, but then compounded the problem by mixing up the presidents of Egypt and Mexico.

Trump, 77, has also mixed up people’s names recently, confusing his last rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Nikki Haley, with former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Putin, nonetheless, expressed strong opposition to Washington’s foreign policy under Biden.

“What we have to examine is the political position, and that of the current administration is extremely harmful and wrong,” said Putin.

Pro-Alh. Garba Abubakar Corporate Affairs Commission pulls down online registration activities; Billions of Naira Revenue lost

by Leading Reporters February 10, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

A Group of Staff said to be loyal to the immediate past Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, Alh. Garba Abubakar has allegedly grounded online operations in the agency, making company registration and other corporate registration and payment impossible for weeks now. This has led to loss of revenue by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

LeadingReporters gathered that this move was one of the strategies by the staff loyal to the former RG to bring the current registrar general to a renegotiation table.

A discreet source that spoke to LeadingReporters on condition of anonymity said that this was not the first time a situation like this has happened.

“We experience issues like this each time a new leadership emerges in the agency.  Saboteur staff would always align with their preferred boss and make a mess of the system for an incoming leadership.”

He said the trend began when CAC completed digitalization and online processing of its operations.  He said the then registrar general had a deal with the company that completed the digitalization of the agency’s operations.  He amassed so much money from the project and went ahead and put a structure that would continue to fetch him returns from the project, even after leaving office.

“When the then RG left and a new one was appointed, the then-incoming RG requested a cancellation of the agency’s ” deal ” with the former RC.  All hell was loose.  This situation led to the ICT company unplugging the database and CAC services grounded for weeks, if not months, until a renegotiation was done.

The source said that the problem is all about personal gratification by those who call the shot in the agency and those loyal to them.

“The suspension of CAC online operations is all about who takes what.  It is the fight of the Titans and about their interests.  They want to push the current RG, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji to negotiate with them.  Unfortunately, the staff are the canon fodders.

Meanwhile the Federal Government has continued to lose revenue because of the internal fight and power play.  Clients’ jobs are taking months to be delivered.

written by Leading Reporters

A comprehensive list of the 63 Government-Owned Enterprises (GOEs) reveals significant revenue projections, expenditures, and remittances to the federal government for the year 2024.

Among these entities are prominent organizations such as the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, Corporate Affairs Commission, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Health Insurance Scheme, Nigerian Customs Service, and many more. Each GOE has outlined its specific financial plan for the year, with entities like the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria projecting to earn N903,080,000.00 in revenue, expend N1,808,190,693.00, and transfer N363,080,000.00 to the federal government.

The detailed financial projections of these GOEs were disclosed in a budget proposal submitted to the federal government by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and accessed by Our Reporters. The National Assembly’s approval of the 2024 appropriation bill on December 30, 2023, resulted in an increased budget size from the initial N27.5 trillion proposed by President Bola Tinubu to N28.7 trillion. This adjustment, totaling N1.2 trillion, is attributed to the optimistic revenue forecasts from these government enterprise entities.

Among the 63 GOEs are Administrative Staff College Of Nigeria, Corporate Affairs Commission, Council For The Regulation Of Freight Forwarding In Nigeria, Federal Airport Authority Of Nigeria, Federal Competition And Consumer Protection Commission, Federal Housing Authority, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Federal Mortgage Bank Of Nigeria, Federal Road Safety Corps, Financial Reporting Council Of Nigeria, Industrial Training Fund, Joint Admission And Matriculation Board, Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board, National Agency For Food & Drug Administration & Control, National Automotive Design And Development Council, National Broadcasting Commission, National Business And Technical Examination Board, National Examination Council, National Film And Video Censors Board, National Health Insurance Scheme, National Information Technology Development Agency, National Inland Waterways Authority, National Insurance Commission, National Lottery Regulatory Commission, National Lottery Trust Fund, National Office For Technology Acquisition And Promotion, National Pension Commission, National Space Research And Development Agency and National Sugar Development Council.

President Tinubu’s wife, neglect Nigeria, donates $100,000 for construction of first-class medical centre in Sierra-Leone.

by Leading Reporters February 6, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

According to Nigerians in Diaspora, Sierra Leone Chapter (NIDO, SL), the donation is in fulfillment of her pledge toward the construction of a first-class medical centre for Nigerians in Sierra Leone.

The donation, according to a press statement by the organization, is a fulfillment of her pledge toward the construction of a first-class medical centre for Nigerians in Sierra Leone.

NIDO President in Sierra Leone, Engineer Abiodun Oyebola, requested her support due to the dire and urgent need for a medical centre, due to the dilapidated state of healthcare facilities in Sierra Leone. The NIDO MEDICAL CENTRE when completed and becomes operational will go a long way to address the medical needs of over 40,000 Nigerians living in Sierra Leone, and will no doubt complement the efforts of His Excellency, President Julis Maada Bio in closing the gaps in the health sector.

Nigeria’s First Lady met with a cross-section of members of the Nigerians in Diaspora, Sierra Leone on Sunday, November 19, 2023, during her visit to the country as the Special Guest of Honour to the commemoration of UN World Day, hosted by Her Excellency, Dr. Fatima Bio, the First lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation NIDO Sierra Leone SL was formed pursuant to a directive by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM in Abuja, headed by Hon Abike Dabiri. Hon. Dabiri-Erewa played a pivotal role in her characteristic professional way. Right from Abuja, she coordinated the meeting which proved to be the platform for Her Excellency, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu to meet with and inform the Nigerians in Sierra Leone of the great efforts being undertaken by her husband, His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to revamp the Nigerian ailing economy. The meeting, no doubt was huge success.  Nigerians in attendance were able to interact directly with Her Excellency, The First Lady, to get first-hand information and clarifications on various issues on the economy, security, social development, etc, raised by the executive members, Patrons and members of the Board of Trustees of the NIDO SL, led by their President, Abiodun Oyebola.

The donation came in from the Renewed Hope Initiative, the humanitarian pet project of Her Excellency, Senator Tinubu. This is a very big boost to alleviate the challenges being faced by Nigerians in Sierra Leone, especially in the health delivery sector of the country. Recall that Sierra Leone is still grappling with the consequences of the 11-year brutal civil war that destroyed all national social infrastructure. Just as the government is struggling to reinstate the health and educational infrastructure, it recorded a big setback with the outbreak of the Ebola virus which ravaged the country from 2014 to early 2016 and killed over 4,000 people in the country. This was further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020 to 2022.

Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Sierra Leone Chapter remains a trailblazer among the various NIDO chapters all over the world. NIDO Sierra Leone is the first to organise the largest single gathering of Nigerians abroad under one roof during the inauguration of President Abiodun Oyebola and his executives on July 6, 2019, where over 4, 500 Nigerians gathered to celebrate our national unity. This remains the largest gathering to date.

Similarly, the NIDO MEDICAL CENTRE, a project for non-profit, is the first of its kind in the diaspora. It is therefore not surprising that NIDO Sierra Leone is the First Chapter to formally receive and have in audience our dear First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu who coincidentally was in Sierra Leone on her very first official trip outside Nigeria and in her capacity as the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Exposed: Ecobank MD Jubril Mobolaji Lawal fingered in diversion of N1.7 billion meant for power generation

by Leading Reporters February 5, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

Across the Africa continent flies Ecobank Nigeria, courtesy of it being under Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, being the parent company of Ecobank Group. While it rides on the wave of acclaimed public trust that banks with it in Nigeria to defend its success, what Nigerians didn’t know is that Ecobank is one of those that has denied them having constant electricity for years.

Welcome to the sordid but realistic tales of how Ecobank walked away with billions and did nothing. The year was 2015, when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the embattled sacked Governor, Godwin Emefiele, without any directive of then President Goodluck Jonathan incorporated a Special Purpose Vehicle called NESI Stabilization Strategy Limited.

What Jonathan initially approved is a stabilization fund to be limited by guarantee in order for NESI to address the problems in the electricity industry to operate for 10 years wherein the fund would have been repaid. To see this noble idea come to pass, some banks were selected, an action which saw Nigerians sleep while the banks owners buga away.

One of the banks selected was Ecobank and indeed committed one of the biggest electricity heist against Nigeria. The Bolaji Lawal led bank over the years engaged in manipulation by unlawfully arranging and collected part of the 1.9535% for participating in the Nigerian Electricity Market Stabilization Facility. These fees were paid to Ecobank in ration of its contribution to the NEMSF disbursement, according to External Auditor’s Notes to the Financial Statement of NESI Stabilization Strategy Limited.

Ecobank Nigeria walked away fraudulently with N1.7 billion without doing anything, one of the highest by the league of banks who perpetrated the fraud. This has been unearthed by the Jim Obazee investigative team, carrying out a fact finding on how the CBN was governed under Emefiele.

In its report to President Bola Tinubu which is in our possession, he indicted Bolaji Lawal and all its Managing Directors from 2015 till date stating that “it is important that all artificial and natural persons involved in this manipulation, to which public funds were plundered, must be held accountable and responsible”.

It went further to make a recommendation to Tinubu that Ecobank should refund the sum of N1.7 billion criminally diverted. That money if converted to today’s money will see Lawal signing away over N13 billion from the bank’s cover due to the fallen exchange rate of N170 at 2015 to N1450 in 2024 open market rates. Nigerian-born Japanese Investor petitions President Tinubu over missing $900m in his UBA account; warns Nigerians in Diaspora to be wary of banks as UBA

by Leading Reporters January 12, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has been described as a bank Nigerians in the diaspora should avoid at any cost. A Nigerian-born Japanese investor of international repute, Osabuohien Ese Imasuan, in a petition to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu narrated how Tony-Elumelu’s UBA seized his legitimate fund totaling $900,000,000 (Nine Hundred Million Dollars) which was paid into his UBA Account No. 3000271285.

According to information exclusively obtained by LeadingReporters, the victim, via an appeal to President Tinubu’s private investigator narrated how a legitimate investment fund, paid into his UBA account was withheld by the bank on the instructions of Mr., Tony Elumelu.   He said UBA connived with the then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emiefele to withhold his business funds which he repatriated to Nigeria from Japan.

According to information privy to LeadingReporters, Mr. Imasaun said that UBA, via a text message, after much pressure, notified him that a ban on his account had been lifted and he was free to transact, only for him to get to the bank and could not assess his funds.

Narrating his ordeal, Mr. Imasaun described himself as a legitimate international businessman who has chains of verifiable businesses in Japan, South Korea and other parts of the world.  According to the letter, exclusively obtained by LeadingReporters, Mr. Imasaun said he is a businessman based in Japan and trading under Imasaun Investment Japan Limited, with a registered office situated at No. 405364, Iwai Cho Hodo Gaya Ku Tokohama Shi Kana Japan.

Mr. Imasaun said he is a well-known international businessman who has resided in Japan for over 18 years without any criminal record, via his resident permit No. RC77047731HA and trades on Forex which in turn attracts commissions and other investible returns.

Mr. Imasaun said that his love for Nigeria and to contribute his quota towards national growth through a series of investments, he decided to warehouse some proceeds of his legitimate funds through UBA, unknown to him that the security of his fund is not safe with his choice bank.

He said the plan was a deliberate attempt to mess him up and cow him into forfeiting his hard-earned money.  He said he regretted not heeding the earlier warning given to him that UBA was a bank with questionable credentials, despite the media hype and strategic branding of Mr. Tony Elumelu.

Meanwhile, a Texas-based pro-investment Group, The League of Patriots has appealed to President Tinubu to wade into the matter in a view to compelling Mr. Tony Elumelu to release Mr. Imasaun Funds, with all the interests and profits accruable to the fund, since it is obvious, they have been trading with the said fund since the fund was kept in their care.

Barry Nwani, the spokesman of the group, following the League’s Zoom meeting communique said the group would not hesitate to mobilize all its members in the USA, Europe, and Asia to blacklist UBA and other banks that frustrate the efforts of Nigerians in diaspora from bringing in legitimate fund and investing in their home country.

He described Tony Elumelu’s philanthropic activities as a smokescreen peculiar with economic hitmen and jackals.

All efforts to reach UBA to have its say on the allegations proved unsuccessful as texts and calls made to the public affairs department of the bank, through their spokesman Mr. Ramon Nasir were not responded to.

Betta Edu made illegal request to wire funds into personal account: on: Accountant General

by Leading Reporters January 6, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

The humanitarian minister had in a letter referenced: FMHAPA/HQ/S.208 and dated December 20, 2023, requested that the AGF transfer the money to the personal account of one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola, as the fund was meant for grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun and Lagos States.

The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein, has revealed that she did not honour the controversial N585.198 million requested by the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Betta Edu.

But following the public backlash concerning the illegality of the request by the minister, the AGF, in a statement issued by the OAGF director of press, Bawa Mokwa, in Abuja, on Saturday, said it wasn’t her responsibility to make payments for projects and programmes on behalf of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

According to Mrs Madein, allocations are released to self-accounting MDAs in line with the budget and such MDAs are responsible for the implementation of their projects and payments for such projects.

The AGF’s statement read, “The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Dr Oluwatoyin Madein has clarified that the OAGF does not make payments on behalf of MDAs for projects and programmes implemented by the MDAs.

“The AGF was reacting to media reports concerning a request from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for payment of grants to vulnerable groups in some States of the Federation.

“She stated that allocations are released to self-accounting MDAs in line with the budget and such MDAs are responsible for the implementation of their projects and payments for such projects,” she explained.

Admitting that, “her Office received the said request from the Ministry, it did not carry out the payment. The Ministry was however advised on the appropriate steps to take in making such payments in line with the established payment procedure.”

Explaining the appropriate way the request should have been made, the AGF explained that, “in such situations, payments are usually processed by the affected Ministries as self-accounting entities and no bulk payment is supposed to be made to an individual’s account in the name of Project Accountant.”

“Such payment should be sent to the beneficiaries through their verified bank accounts,” she added.

Mrs Madein expressed her resolve to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency in the management of public finances while she advised MDAs to always ensure that the requisite steps are taken in carrying out financial transactions.

The AGF, reacting to media reports that the OAGF played a role in payment of funds meant for the NSIP into private account by the Minister, the OAGF in a statement on Saturday, 6 January, 2024 by Director of Press, Bawa Mokwa, said the Office does not make payments on behalf of MDAs for projects and programmes implemented by the MDAs.

The reaction was due to reports credited to Dr. Betta Edu that she made a request from the OAGF that grants be paid to vulnerable groups in some states of the Federation.

N44.8bn fraud Alleged implicate Dr Betta Edu

by Leading Reporters January 5, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, has alerted of desperate plans by some persons to implicate her in the N44.8bn fraud in the National Social Investment Programme Agency, NSIPA.

She insisted that some elements who have been trying to link her to a phantom fraud, “are behind this latest misadventure.”

“…says fund for vulnerable groups in 4 states approved, went through due process – Edu“

“…point fingers to Oniyelu Bridget is Project Accountant for Grant for Vulnerable Groups, she clarifies“

The minister, reacting to the allegation of her involvement through her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Rasheed Olanrewaju Zubair, on Friday evening, explained that the fund for the vulnerable groups in four states of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states was not only approved but also went through due process.

“For the avoidance, the said N585,198,500.00 was approved, and it is meant for the implementation of Grants to Vulnerable Groups, GVG, in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states,” she added.

A response to the allegation by the ministry, read:”The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation notes with dismay, on a memo from the Ministry to the Accountant-General of the Federation approving for payment, of the sum of N585,189,500.00 Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups for four states, which is currently being circulated in the social media.

“It is glaring that the same sponsored disgruntled elements in the past few days have been trying to smear the Honourable Minister, Dr Betta Edu, and stain her integrity following the Federal Government’s ongoing 44.8 Billion Fraud in NSIPA. These elements have been trying to link her to a phantom fraud and are behind this latest misadventure.

“However, this latest vile effort of theirs is another infantile blackmail doomed for evisceration.

“For the avoidance, the said N585,198,500.00 was approved, and it is meant for the implementation of Grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states. We must, however, note that GVG was first launched in the Kogi state where recipients testified.

“Akwa Ibom and Cross River were launched in December 2023, Kogi in November, and others will be launched in the coming weeks.

“The general public is invited to note that the Renewed Hope Grant for Vulnerable Groups is one of the social intervention schemes of the federal government, which is being implemented by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“Oniyelu Bridget is the Project Accountant for GVG from the Department of Finance and it is Legal in civil service for staff, the Project accountant to be paid and use the same funds legally and retire same with all receipts and evidence after the project or Programme is completed.

“The evil motive of the mischief-makers behind the circulation of the memo is well-known and should be ignored. Of note is the fact that since assumption of duty about Five months ago, the Minister has religiously visited different parts of the country like Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Lagos Cross River among others and this is done to ensure she delivers on her mandate and she has remained focused, unbiased and committed to duty.”

Nigeria’s gale of demolitions: The missing point

by Leading Reporters December 3, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

By Tonnie Iredia

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state (2015-2023) left no one in doubt that he had enormous capacity for project development. No other governor in the history of Nigeria ever evolved his type of schedule for the daily commissioning of projects for several months without stop. His penchant for saying things as they are, no matter who is hurt, may have earned him several political enemies but no one disputes his well-deserved award of ‘Mr Project’ first bestowed on him by former vice president Yemi Osinbajo. It was against this backdrop that his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT by president Bola Tinubu provoked great expectations of Abuja almost immediately wearing a new look along with consequential collateral damage of demolitions of buildings erected on illegally acquired land or without approved building plans.

Wike lived up to expectation as his first move revealed his determination to eliminate every distortion to the Abuja master plan and make the city befitting as Nigeria’s capital. At his maiden news conference, he confirmed his readiness to tackle all unplanned structures that can compromise urban development. To all those who have contributed to distorting the master plan he said “be you a Minister of anywhere, be you an ambassador, if you know you have developed where you were not supposed to develop, your house must go down. Those who have taken over the green areas to build, sorry, our parks must come back, the green areas must come back.” A few weeks later, FCT’s Department of Development Control identified thousands of illegal buildings for demolition in no less than 30 locations in the territory.

In fairness to Wike, the policy of demolitions in the FCT was not started by him. Former FCT Minister, Nasir El Rufai had in fact been more identified as the ‘demolition man.’ During his tenure, Nasir according to Mohammed Alkali, the then general counsel of the Federal Capital Territory Authority destroyed over 75,000 houses and other public property. El Rufai himself found time to explain that he had no regrets for doing what he did notwithstanding his stepping on several toes adding that he took the drastic actions to save Abuja from being turned into a slum by influential persons in the corridors of power. According to the former minister, rich and powerful elements in the military and politics had with the connivance of others cornered choice plots in the city through the back door.

If building demolitions were restricted to the FCT one would have attributed the trend to the special nature of the location as the most developed part of Nigeria with huge infrastructural facilities. But then, demolitions were also taking place in other cities. In kano state, the new administration of governor Abba Yusuf wasted no time in rolling out bulldozers to begin the demolition of private buildings, which he had earlier declared during his campaigns, as illegal structures erected during the tenure of his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje. Abba had actually anchored his campaign on a promise of mass demolitions if he got elected as he accused the previous administration of splintering public assets, specifically land, and selling them to its cronies.

In Ogun state, many expect demolitions because the government had earlier marked several houses and directed their owners to remove them. According to Ola Oresanya who had served as Commissioner for Environment, the affected houses were built on drainage channels that were obstructing the flow of water. The government had warned that any owner who waited for official demolition would have to refund to government, tax payers’ monies incurred in removing the buildings. The Ogun state government has indeed, continued to express concerns over the impact of urban flooding in such parts of the state as Ikenne Local Government Area.  Like Ogun, Lagos state which has had a rather large share of demolitions and evictions in Nigeria, insists that structures built on drainage channels would be demolished.

Both the owners of demolished buildings and government spend ample time canvassing each other’s perspective. Here, the government which has organs of mass communication to propagate its viewpoint has expectedly had the upper hand. The major justification which government officials keep making is that the demolitions are usually done in the public interest. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, in Lagos State probably beat everybody to it last Wednesday when he shared a photo of a house built on a canal in the state obstructing the free flow of water. But we caution against overblowing the story because not every demolished building was erected on a canal or some sort of drainage channel.

Some 5 months ago, a popular newspaper had used one of its editorials to condemn the immediate past administration in kano state for allegedly carving out plots from the grounds of public schools, hospitals and utilities, and selling or distributing them to government officials and their relatives in the state. Such plots which were reportedly taken out of school football fields, and also in-between classroom blocks, for the construction of shops for commercial activities cannot be justified. It is generally believed that right from the days of the Maroko saga in Lagos state, the motivation for the acquisition of plots and the demolitions of buildings in certain Nigeria cities is obviously not altruistic as government officials would want the public to believe.

The constant resort by some Nigerians to illegal acquisition of land or the construction of buildings, without appropriate approvals, is unacceptable. But if the people miss that point, a greater miss is the failure of the government to provide shelter for its citizens as seen in the huge figure of housing deficit in the country. In his ‘Hierarchy of Needs’, the legendary psychologist, Robert Maslow, had persuasively described shelter as a basic right. Interestingly, the Nigerian government despite Section 43 of our constitution which sees citizens’ shelter as a right, is yet to accept it as its duty to the people. Citizens ought to be motivated rather dissuaded from getting sheltered. Indeed, the sanctity of the subject as clothed in the next Section 44 of the same constitution abhors compulsory acquisition without compensation.

The real missing point in Nigeria’s demolitions is the failure of government to sanction insider abuses. To start with, government at the point of enforcement has a habit of not separating citizens in possession of approvals from those who have none. Once demolition is pronounced by the political head; everyone, the innocent and the guilty suffer same fate. Besides, many approvals which turn out to be phony were the handiwork of public lands and housing officials serving or retired. Nothing is known to have been done to them. If government was ‘demolishing’ such deviants from work the way they send bulldozers to penalize acclaimed wrong owners, building demolitions would have since been drastically reduced. But it is never so; instead such perverse personnel remain at work and more often than not, advance to the highest grade thereby encouraging the growth of such cabals and perpetuating their misconduct.

If other leaders claim not to know, minister Nyesom Wike cannot because he has made public how such officials had attempted to extort funds from him even as governor of Rivers state. It is therefore obvious that no one can really claim ignorance of the existence of the cabals because their methodologies and operational patterns hardly change. Why for instance is it that buildings get demolished several decades after they had been completed and occupied? Where were those who become super active during demolitions when such buildings were at foundation levels? Is it not an open secret that the real meaning of sign X placed on any building to stop further work is for the owners to visit the enforcement officials for settlement?

Some demolitions may no doubt be inevitable. But in such cases, government must proceed and function with a human face.  All those involved in the breaches necessitating demolitions which should include government officials should be equally sanctioned. Since we are in a democracy, punitive and ‘surprise demolitions’ such as midnight actions should be avoided even where court approvals have been secured. Victims should never be given grounds to imagine any form of discrimination.  We all desire beautiful cities, just as we all deserve affordable shelter.
