The doctrine of beheading for blasphemy is not Allah’s but that of a self-acclaimed jurist – Muslim Cleric

by Leading Reporters July 11, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

A renowned Islamic cleric Ustaz Abdul-Lateef Adekilekun and the Waziri Muminina of Yorubaland has strongly frowned at the practice of beheading or killing for blasphemy in Islam.  He said the practice was propagated by a self-acclaimed jurist and has no doctrinal basis in Islam.

Adekilekun’s reaction followed the recent incident in Sokoto state, where a butcher was stoned to death on allegations of blasphemy against the Prophet.

In his statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ede, Adekilekun emphasized that it is not in accordance with Islamic teachings to take another person’s life due to blasphemy. He reiterated that Islam is a religion of peace and does not promote violence.

Furthermore, the cleric recalled reading a book 61 years ago that advocated beheading anyone who accuses the prophet, clarifying that the book was not the Quran or Hadith. He explained that it was a publication authored by a self-proclaimed jurist.

In his words, “I remember, I read a book and I was taught in the class exactly 61 years ago where they said anyone who accused Prophet Muhammad should be beheaded. But the book is neither the Qur’an nor hadith. It is just a book written by a self-styled jurist.

He described the action of killing over blasphemy as an expression of ignorance by the Nigerian devotees especially from Northern Nigeria who fly with beliefs that have no Islamic origin.

“Our problem in Nigeria is ignorance.  Blasphemy in Nigeria is mainly from the Northern part of the country and the cause is ignorance.”

“You rarely hear of such in the Southern part of the country where enlightenment and awareness are more pronounced”

The cleric said that the establishment of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies is established to help bridge the gap of ignorance as the board is saddled with the responsibility of blending Islamic-Oriented education with Western education for a proper understanding of Islam.

Rwanda Waives Entry Visas for Nigerians, Africans, Commonwealth Members

by Leading Reporters July 5, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

The Rwandan government has waived entry visas for Nigerians, other Africans and members of the Commonwealth in order to promote the ease of doing business and attract investors into the Central/Eastern African country.

Speaking at the commemoration of Rwanda’s 29th anniversary celebration and liberation day in Abuja on Tuesday, the country’s Charge D’Affaires in Nigeria, Mr. Vianney Rubagumya, said: “In a bid to widen tourism and spur trade and investment, Rwanda has waived entry visas to visitors from all over Africa, the Commonwealth, and la Francophonie nations.

“The move complements the ease of doing business strides and popularity as a preferred Conference destination.”

He also disclosed that Rwanda is in advanced stages of expanding the operations of the Kigali International Financial Centre, which is poised to dispense innovative world-class services.

According to the envoy, “29 years after, ‘Liberation’ is still in process. At the forefront of the leadership agenda of H.E President Paul Kagame, animated by the ‘Vision 2050’, is the commitment to consolidate and sustain the journey towards self-reliance by ensuring holistic economic emancipation, as well as effective and accountable systems of governance.

“In this process of Liberation, Rwanda counts on her citizens of course, but also on her friends and partners. I therefore take this opportunity to commend the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the immense support during the transformation journey and the excellent bilateral cooperation.”

He stressed that President Kagame’s attendance at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023 was an affirmation of the strong bond between Nigeria and Rwanda.

He said: “Both countries are increasing cooperation, including in parliamentary diplomacy, defence and security, aviation, governance, sectoral peer-to-peer exchange, and trade and investment.

“Rwanda’s renaissance, is conceived around three major choices, which H.E President Paul Kagame pointed out in his 7th April 2014 speech: Unity, Accountability, and Thinking Big.

“Based on those fundamental choices, Rwanda decisively embarked on structural socio-economic and political reforms, which have been guiding the transformational process. In this connection, some of the significant milestones, include: reduced poverty levels between 1994 and 2018 from 78% to 30%, respectively; increased life expectancy from 51 to 69 years in the last two decades; 2nd best performer in the ease of doing business in Africa; 4th top troop contributing country to the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping
operations.”

The Nigerian representative at the anniversary celebration, Samson Itegboje, assured the Rwandan government of continued support towards building Rwandan economy.

Governments in Canada Declare August 5, 2023 as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture

by Leading Reporters July 2, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

At the request of the Igbo Cultural Association of Saskatchewan (ICAS) Inc., the Government of Saskatchewan has issued a proclamation designating August 5, 2023 as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture in the Canadian province.

“We invite all Igbo people, our friends and well-wishers, to join us as we celebrate our cultural heritage in Canada at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Regina Performing Arts Centre, 1077 Angus Street, Regina,” said Dr. Chidi Igwe, President of the Igbo Cultural Association of Saskatchewan.

The proclamation was issued by the Saskatchewan Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, who writes in the Certificate of Recognition that “I, Laura Ross, Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport in the Province of Saskatchewan in exercise of the powers conferred upon me, do hereby designate the day of August 5, 2023 to be ‘lgbo Day of Arts and Culture’ in Saskatchewan.”

In issuing the proclamation, Minister Ross also enjoined the citizens of the Province of Saskatchewan to recognize Igbo Day as proclaimed by their government.

In the same manner, on behalf of the municipal government of Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan, Mayor Sandra Masters and the City of Regina have designated August 5, 2023 as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture. They also encouraged the residents of the Queen City (as Regina is known locally) to dedicate this day for the celebration of culture with the Igbo community of Saskatchewan.

In a goodwill message addressed to all Igbo people in Regina, Mayor Masters writes that “the diversity of our community is something that Regina takes great pride in. We believe that this blend of different cultures is what makes not only our city, but our country, unique on the world stage.”

Mayor Masters encourages the residents of Regina “to recognize August 5th, 2023, as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture here in Regina.”

She highlights that “this year’s theme of Oganihu Asusu na Omenala Igbo (Preservation of the Igbo Language and Culture) is a universal concept that numerous cultures can relate to. Language preservation is imperative for many of those that call Regina home, and we commend the work that Nigerian Canadian people of Igbo descent are engaging in to bring awareness to their language and culture.”

  • Municipal government of Regina designates August 5, 2023 as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture: https://www.icassask.ca/images/pdf/proclamation-regina-2023.pdf

Recall that in what became the first official designation of a day as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture by a provincial and a municipal government in the whole of Canada, both the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Regina issued a proclamation recognizing Igbo Day in 2019. Below are electronic copies of the 2019 certificates of proclamation:

  • Municipal government of Regina designates August 3, 2019 as Igbo Day of Arts and Culture: https://www.icassask.ca/images/pdf/proclamation-regina-2019.pdf

“Ndi Igbo (Igbo people) in Saskatchewan are delighted to receive this level of support from the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Regina. By recognizing Igbo Day, the two levels of government are encouraging our people to practice our language and culture in our new country,” ICAS President Dr. Chidi Igwe said. “We invite everyone to join us for a celebration of culture, a taste of Igbo cuisine, artistic displays, dance and performances, as Igbo people in Canada,” he said.

ICAS was founded in 2002 to preserve the Igbo Canadian heritage through events, workshops, language and culture education. Every two years, we celebrate Igbo Day, dedicating the day to promoting awareness and use of the Igbo language, art, as well as the Igbo Nigerian-Canadian cultural heritage in Saskatchewan. The 2021 edition of Igbo Day was canceled due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

The theme of the 2023 Igbo Day, “Oganihu Asusu na Omenala Igbo (Preservation of the Igbo Language and Culture)”, was selected to increase the awareness and use of the Igbo language, art and culture in Saskatchewan, as well as honour the contributions of the c of Igbo descent to the cultural, professional and economic development of Saskatchewan in particular and Canada as a whole.

This is the worst and loneliest prison in US where Umar Abdulmutallab is serving

by Leading Reporters July 2, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian-American young boy who attempted to bomb an airplane is serving in the worse and loneliest prison in United States of America called The United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility (USP Florence ADMAX), commonly known as ADX Florence or Supermax,

This Supermax Prison in America is the only federal supermax prison that hosts the deadliest and most dangerous prisoners. It has the tightest security. No criminal has ever escaped from this prison. Ever!

Currently, there are about 439 inmates in this prison. Many inmates in this prison commit su!c!de because they are isolated completely from all humans. Suicide is the only way out and this is because of the level of isolation inmates suffer

In this prison, inmates are so isolated that they can’t communicate with any human and completely can not hear any sound at all— they can’t even see the prison guards or other prisoners year in, year out.

Tinubu divulges his advisers excluded fuel subsidy removal from inaugural speech

by Leading Reporters June 25, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that the fuel subsidy removal was initially not part of his inaugural speech as it was excluded by his Special Advisers, Wale Edun and Dele Alake, but he felt he had to stop it on the first day in office.

The president described the fuel subsidy as a “scam” and disincentive to growth, noting it rewarded smugglers and reduced the burden of the “real cost” of the commodity for some countries.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, this was made known by President Tinubu, while addressing members of the Nigerian community in France on Friday, June 23, 2023.

President Tinubu, who disclosed that it was the next day after the announcement that he called the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, adding that he let out the giant elephant of fuel subsidy without bringing down the house.

Fuel subsidy was a scam

President Tinubu said the interest of Nigerians will always be protected, even in engagements with the international community, governments and multilateral institutions on global issues relating to climate change, energy transition, food security, trade, security and diplomacy.

According to the statement, the President said,

  • “We have transport challenges, electricity challenges, infrastructural challenges and others. I let out the giant elephant of fuel subsidy without bringing down the house,’’ he said, adding, “Our diversity is our asset, if we know how to use it.’’
  • The statement added, ‘’President Tinubu explained that the fuel subsidy was a “scam” and disincentive to growth as it rewarded smugglers and reduced the burden of real cost of the commodity for some countries.
  • ‘’He said the Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, Wale Edun and Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, had excluded fuel subsidy removal in his inaugural speech, but he felt it was expedient to stop the subsidy on the first day.’’

Tinubu said, “It was the next day I called the GMD of NNPL.’’

What you should know

  • Recall that President Bola Tinubu during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, announced that fuel subsidy is gone as there was no provision for that in the 2023 budget from July 1.
  • The President pledged his administration’s support to channel the money to provide basic infrastructural needs to Nigerians.
  • The action of the president has been backed by some stakeholders and interest groups including state governors, legislators, oil marketers, economic and financial experts, among several others.
  • However, this did not go that well with organized labour due to the spike in the pump price of petrol, leading to a declaration of a planned strike action and protest by the NLC and TUC.
  • The strike was however suspended on the backdrop of the judgment of the Industrial Court which restrained them from going ahead with the strike as well as the outcome of the meeting between the leadership of the organized labour and representatives of the Federal Government.

Okonjo Iwuala bemoans the level of divisiveness among Nigerians

by Leading Reporters June 25, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has lamented the level of disunity in Nigeria, describing the situation as sad.

She spoke via her verified Twitter handle yesterday  while debunking reports alleging that she snubbed  President Bola Tinubu during the just-concluded summit for a New Global Financing Pact  in Paris, France.

Okonjo-Iweala had posted photographs with some participating African presidents like that of Senegal, Macky Sall; South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema – at the summit which was also attended by President Tinubu.

Social media users in Nigeria, especially supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, who go by the appellation of ‘Obi-dients’, hailed Okonjo-Iweala for purportedly snubbing Tinubu at the global event.

Consequently, many netizens who are supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, otherwise known as ‘BATists’ began to fire what can be described as a counter salvo without finding out the veracity or otherwise of the claim.

They alleged that President Tinubu was deliberately cropped out of the photographs despite his attendance of the summit convened by the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

But, amid the social media spat between the two groups of Nigerians occasioned by false claims and counter-claims, Okonjo-Iweala took to her verified Twitter handle again yesterday to debunk the allegations against her.

She shared more photographs she took at the summit with President Tinubu, Nigerian businessman Tony Elumelu and others, noting that photographs with other African presidents earlier posted by her were done in the order she received them from her accompanying staff and colleagues at the event.

She, therefore, stated that ascribing any ulterior motive or meaning to her action (order of posting her photographs) was unnecessary and unwarranted even as she called for unity of purpose and cessation of further attacks by Nigerians.

Okonjo-Iweala wrote: “Nigerians please relax! Re Paris, Interesting attacks from both sides. Sadly shows the depth of polarization in our society. I post photos in the order received by accompanying staff or colleagues. Reading more into it is unwarranted. Let’s unite to build our country not attack!”

President Tinubu vows to appoint an Abuja indigene as the next Minister of the Federal Capital Territory

by Leading Reporters June 20, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

The days look good for the indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory FCT as President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has vowed to appoint a native the next Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A discreet source who hinted on this said that President Tinubu countered all pressures on him to appoint one of his ‘loyalist’ into the juicy position of FCT minister.

“Several names of party stalwarts were presented to the President to choose from as the Minister of FCT.  His first question was if the names given to him were all indigenes from FCT.  When he was told that the names were his friends, close associates and that of his ‘loyalists’, the President was said to have vowed that if he or she is not an indigene of FCT, he or she does not stand a chance to be appointed an FCT minister under his administration”

The President was also quoted to have told his advisors, and associates that it was only natural, fair, and wise to appoint an Indigene as the next Minister of FCT.

He was said to have hinted that even though Abuja is the Federal Capital Territory, he believes in giving honour to whom it is due.

Furthermore, the source said that the President may go beyond party affiliation to appoint an FCT Minister. He was said to be looking for a grassroot mobilizer and a stabilizer who will help him push for the policies he has for the FCT.

One of the names being pushed forward, according to another source is the immediate past Senator of FCT, Senator Philip Aduda. Senator Philip Aduda is seen as the voice of the indigenes and is loved across boards among the indigenes. Senator Aduda lost to the Labour Party Candidate Senator Ireti Kingibe in the last election.
