by Folarin Kehinde June 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

South Africa’s seventh democratically elected President Cyril Ramaphosa was officially sworn in Wednesday for a second term in office after his reelection by parliament last Friday.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo administered the oath of office in a colorful ceremony attended by several heads of state and government in the capital Pretoria.

“I, Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, swear that I will be faithful to the Republic of South Africa,’’ the 71-year-old said in his oath of office.

Zondo congratulated Ramaphosa and introduced him to the audience after signing a certificate, saying the president-elect has now been duly sworn in. Members of the public watching proceedings from the union building’s lawns erupted into loud cheers after Ramaphosa was sworn in.

Interfaith prayers were held before the swearing-in ceremony with religious leaders praying for the incoming president and the government of national unity.

Members of the South African parliament reelected Cyril Ramaphosa last Friday as president for a second term during the first sitting of the legislature.

50 people caught trying to enter Ireland from UK without visas over four days

by Folarin Kehinde May 28, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Irish police detected 50 people attempting to enter Ireland from the UK illegally last week.

The Gardaí said they were refused leave to land and were returned to the UK across four days.

The force said 107 people had been detected, without the correct visas or identity papers, across 21 days of action since the start of October last year.

Four additional days of action took place in the week commencing May 20, when a further 50 people were detected without the correct paperwork.

It comes after Ireland claimed up to 90 per cent of asylum seekers arriving in Dublin have crossed the open border with Northern Ireland because they fear the Rwanda plan.

Ireland rejected an offer by Rishi Sunak to join the scheme and insisted that Rishi Sunak uphold an agreement to take back migrants, which the Prime Minister insists is not legally binding.

“During these operations, persons entering Ireland illegally and were refused leave to land (RLTL) and returned to the UK by ferry from Dublin Port to Holyhead or returned to Belfast, as appropriate depending on the individual circumstances,” Gardaí said.

In a statement, they added that officers carry out immigration checks along the border on a regular basis to detect breaches of immigration legislation and abuses of the Common Travel Area (CTA).

These include checkpoints on roads and checks on the train line through Louth, close to the border with Northern Ireland.

Gardaí said they have “significant operational co-operation with the UK Border Force, UK policing services and the Police Service of Northern Ireland, supported organisationally by the Cross Border Joint Action Task Force”.

“Our Immigration officers work in close collaboration with personnel operating buses and trains in the area,” they added.

“A human rights-based approach is adopted in relation to every individual stopped. Immigration officers will clearly identify themselves to all passengers on buses or trains.

“All Gardaí members have completed training in the Gardaí Code of Ethics and the Gardaí Decision Making Model. All checks carried out are lawful, objective and respectful.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has announced that First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is in charge of the executive branch following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.

Mokhber has a maximum period of 50 days to hold elections.

The supreme leader Khamenei also announced five days of mourning for President Raisi, saying in an official statement on Monday, “I announce five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear people of Iran.”

Raisi was killed in a crash that occurred on Sunday in Dizmar forest between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in East Azerbaijan province.

The incident occurred as the president was returning from an event to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

Melinda Gates resigns as co-chair from Bill & Gates Foundation after 24 years

by Folarin Kehinde May 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Melinda Gates, the former wife of Microsoft’s founder has said she would step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from June 7.

The 59-year-old revealed on Monday to resign from the Foundation she has co-managed with her ex-husband since 2000.

Melinda disclosed this on Monday via a statement on her X, insisting it was a difficult decision for her.

As part of her separation agreement from Bill Gates, Melinda said she will receive an additional $12.5 billion for her charitable work.

She added that her plans were to channel her charitable works on groups that focus on women and families.

“This is not a decision I came to lightly,” she said in a statement posted on X. “I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world.”

Backing the story, the Foundation’s chief executive officer, Mark Suzman, said the organisation will change its name to the Gates Foundation, and Bill Gates will become the sole chair.

“I am sorry to see Melinda leave, but I am sure she will have a huge impact in her future philanthropic work,” wrote Bill Gates in a separate statement Monday, also posted on X.

The former couple said at the time they would allow themselves a kind of trial period through 2023 to determine if they could continue working with one another to oversee their massive charitable foundation.

Suzman announced in July 2021 a contingency plan “to ensure the continuity of the foundation’s work.”

“If after two years either decides they cannot continue to work together as co-chairs, French Gates will resign her position as co-chair and trustee,” Suzman said.

BREAKING: China hacked UK armed forces data

by Folarin Kehinde May 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence, Sky News understands.

MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

The government will not name the country involved, but Sky News understands this to be China.

The Chinese state is to be accused of two or three attempts at hacking MoD employees – including personnel.

The cyberattack was on a payroll system with current service personnel and some veterans. It is largely names and bank details that have been exposed.

Tobias Ellwood, a Conservative MP and former soldier, told Sky News that China “was probably looking at the financially vulnerable with a view that they may be coerced in exchange for cash”.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to make a statement to the Commons today, with the BBC reporting he will set out a “multi-point plan” which will include action to protect affected service men and women.

The MoD hopes serving personnel will not be concerned about their safety. They will be provided with advice and support tomorrow.

The contractor system is not connected to the main MoD computer systems and has been taken down with a review launched.

BREAKING: Dubai airports shut down temporarily as stormy flood disrupts UAE

by Folarin Kehinde April 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, experienced severe disruptions due to heavy rains on Tuesday, with significant flooding reported across major highways and even affecting operations at the city-state’s primary airport.

Reports say that the flooding commenced overnight, transforming typically arid streets into vast ponds and airport tarmacs. Dubai International Airport, a global hub for international travel and home to Emirates Airlines, grappled with flight disruptions exacerbated by whipping winds accompanying the downpour.

Airport authorities announced a temporary cessation of all operations for approximately 25 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, followed by the diversion of all incoming flights until weather conditions improved, as communicated through official social media channels.

By evening, the UAE had accumulated over 4.75 inches of rainfall, a volume typically seen over a year in the desert nation, with more precipitation anticipated in the ensuing hours. Additionally, rainfall was reported in nearby Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, indicating the widespread impact of the storm across the region.

In Oman, situated on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, the National Committee for Emergency Management released a statement confirming the grim toll of the recent heavy rains. At least 18 fatalities were recorded, including approximately 10 schoolchildren who tragically perished on Monday after being swept away in a vehicle along with an adult.

The incident shows the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events attributed to human-induced climate change, a concern echoed by climatologists worldwide.

Beyond the Arabian Peninsula, regions such as southern Russia and Central Asia have grappled with similarly devastating weather patterns, characterized by unusually high levels of rainfall and snowmelt.

These conditions have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and resulted in fatalities, including over 60 deaths in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

As communities across the globe confront the repercussions of climate change-induced weather extremes, the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact and adapt to evolving environmental challenges becomes increasingly apparent.

In November 2023, the COP28 conference on climate change took place in Dubai, sparking significant discussions and debate, especially considering Dubai’s status as one of the top 10 oil-producing countries.
