Democrats Take Control of Congress in Midterm Setback for Trump
Democrats have won control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, dealing President Donald Trump a major setback halfway through his second term.
The party flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats, including races in Texas, South Carolina, Kansas and Ohio, while also winning back the House. The results mark Democrats’ return to full control of Congress for the first time since 2023.
Voters’ concerns about high prices and the direction of the country featured prominently in the campaign, Democrats are expected to use their new majorities to scrutinise the administration and challenge its agenda. But any legislation will still face President Trump’s veto power.
The new Congress is due to take office in January. Its arrival sets up two years of heightened political conflict in Washington, with Democrats promising stronger oversight and Trump vowing to resist their plans.
