The face-off between the Nigeria Senate and the Comptroller General of Customs Col. Hamid Ali (Rtd.) may be taking another dimension come next Wednesday. According to a privileged information availed LeadingReporters, Col. Hamid Ali’s lawyer may have approached a High Court in Abuja to seek injunction restraining the Nigeria Senate from making it compulsory for his client to wear Customs Uniform before addressing it or issuing arrest warrant on him.
“Col. Ali may be seeking among other things injunction restraining the Senate from issuing arrest warrant on him and making it a compulsion for him to wear Customs Service uniform before appearing before the Senate”.
It would be recalled that the Senate this week refused audience with Col. Hamid Ali on grounds that he did not wear Nigeria Customs Uniform and the rank of a Comptroller General.
Although as LeadingReporters learnt, President Muhammadu Buhari has tried to intervened in the impasse between Col. Ali (Rtd.) and the leadership of the Senate, the President’s mediation did not seem to have helped the situation as the Senate insists that Col Ali should appear before it on Nigerian Customs Service uniform.
Other schools of thought have opined that to save the impasse, that Col. Hamid Ali (Rtd) office should be that of a Sole Administrator instead of the Comptroller General. One of the sources who spoke to us on condition of anonymity asserted that the Senate was right in their decision that Ali must wear uniform.
“You can’t blame the Nigerian Senate for the position they have taken. It is wrong to address Col. Hamid Ali as the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service. He is simply a Sole Administrator. A lot of illegalities are taking place in the President’s quest to sanitize Nigerian Customs Service. I think what is proper in this case is that the President should have appointed a dependable and patriotic career Customs Officer as Comptroller General and appoint Col. Ali (Rtd) as Sole Administrator to administer the policies and reforms of the government while the CG runs and supervises the agency in the form of revenue mobilization and collection”
