“Exercise to be extended not only to the Minister, but to all FCT leaders at the House of Rep, Senate, Chairmen and Counselors”
The plan to commence mobilization for 10,000 signatures from indigenes and residents of the Federal Capital Territory over the poor performance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is very much on course, despite alleged intimidation by the authorities of the Federal Capital Ministry.
Mr. Yunusa A. Yusuf, the Coordinator of FCT Citizens Against Bad Governance stated this to our correspondent after the earlier date for the ‘pro-good governance exercise’ was cancelled.
Mr. Yusuf during a chat with our correspondent vowed that no level of intimidation, threat and harassment by the security agencies would deter them from demanding for good representation for the indigenes and residents of the FCT who have long been short-changed in the affairs and scheme of things within the Federal Capital Territory.
It would be recalled that the peaceful demonstration was earlier slated to hold at AGIS Car Park last Monday but was put off as a result of an alleged threat to frustrate the exercise by the security agents who were alleged to be trailing the coordinator.
Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, Coordinator of FCT Citizens Against Bad Governance has recently alleged that the Minister of FCT Musa Bello has lobbied stakeholders and traditional rulers in the FCT to force him to back down on the move against the wishes of his people.
“The Minister has used a traditional ruler from Bwari area to issue a letter to denounce me that I’m not from Bwari Area Council after he might have extended some largesse to the traditional ruler, but that is not the issue I’m bothered about. As I’m talking to you now the Minister has mobilise heavy presence of security agencies, the police, civil defense, DSS and others with Armor vehicles to man the entire AGIS, centre meant for the collation of the 10,000 signatures”.
Mr. Yusuf described the movement and his activities as not similar to a war situation but a peaceful movement where people demand for accountability from those that lead them.
“We just want people who are shortchanged to speak up through their signatures. It’s a pro-democracy movement that is encouraged everywhere in the world. Why will somebody be afraid to give account of his stewardship and rather chose a path of intimidation to cow people. The issue still remains that the FCT Minister cannot use security agencies to silence me because all what we are saying is that as a Minister of the FCT he should give account of his stewardship”.
Mr. Yusuf further alleged the Minister’s action as infringement on his rights to demand for good governance.
“He should stop infringing on my human right because I have already contacted my lawyer and the International Communities, NGOs and International Institutions, media organizations and they will not take it lightly with him if he continues to prey on me with security agencies.
“If the Minister knows that he is doing the right thing in the FCT, he should allow the FCT citizens to speak about their perception of his administration openly since the measure will adopt an open assessment on his performance”
Mr. Yusuf ruled out any witch hunt against the Minister since he said the open assessment exercise would be extended to other FCT representatives both in the Federal House of Representatives and in the Senate, up to Chairmen and Councilors
