NIPOST sets to restructure operations, begins commercial activities

Established in 1852 as one of the oldest public institutions and the widest available public-private entity in the country with about 1,300 Post Offices and Postal Agencies spread across the 774 Local Government.  NIPOST major operations border on developing, promoting and providing adequate and efficiently coordinated Postal Services at reasonable rates in the country.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) while still maintaining its role is set to commence commercial activities in different sectors of the economy, an initiative in line with the unambiguous Political Will of the Buhari-led Administration to fully implement the Postal Sector Reform.

In line with these reforms, NIPOST has launched a programme of action on restructuring and modernizing its activities in Nigeria.

The PostMaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer, NIPOST, Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi who made the launching of the programme in Abuja when he and his team visited the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu said ‘In accordance with the responsibilities conferred on us in the existing law we have gone ahead to tinker with our structure in the interim to reduce wastage and start behaving as a commercial entity in line with the 2014 Commercial Status Approval by the Federal Government for the Nigerian Postal Service as contained in the white paper on the Report of the Presidential Committee on Restructuring and Rationalization of Federal Government Parastatals, Commission and Agencies’.

Adegbuyi also noted that the launching is a demonstration of the synergy that exists between the Ministry of Communications and NIPOST, saddled with the responsibility of implementing the policy as NIPOST is well strengthened and positioned to provide Nigerians with a solid platform for integration, innovation and inclusion.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu in his response acknowledge the role of ICT as very viable in all sector NIPOST inclusive such that it gives popularity and commercial viability to ensure good and efficient postal service worldwide:

“The challenge before NIPOST and the Government therefore is to seize these combined advantages of population, vibrant youth, existing NIPOST infrastructure, the nation’s land mass, ICT and other available resources to meet the constantly changing dynamics of technological advancement and global integration to create a socially relevant, economically viable and internationally respectable post-driven entity”. Shittu said

Shittu however stated that the Ministry of Communication has approved a reform programme that will culminate in the formal unbundling of NIPOST’s commercial and regulatory activities into several profit-oriented, limited liability subsidiaries such as NIPOST property & Development Company Limited to take over the profitable management of all NIPOST property nationwide, NIPOST transport & Logistics Limited (commercial management of NIPOST’s transport fleet), and NIPOST Merchandising Limited (to take advantage of the growing e-commerce sector in the country.

Others include NIPOST General Services & Support Company Limited ( a social inclusion and public engagement company offering e-government and other franchise services and NIPOST Digital Financial Service Limited ( the Post Bank that will offer financial inclusion services as a Mobile Money Operator licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria)

A ten-man modernization steering committee headed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications, Architect Sonny Echono was however inaugurated by  ICT who urge them to bring into reality the reforms before the end of 2017.
